Clydebank Playdrome to be replaced by 115 homes

Miller Homes have shown their hand in proposals to redevelop the former Playdrome leisure centre in Clydebank in the form of a pre-application consultation.

The 3.5-hectare site has been sold off by West Dunbartonshire Council to complement ongoing regeneration in the town, following the opening of a modern leisure centre at Queens Quay.

Preferred uses for the site had been a mix of retail, leisure, restaurant and commercial but will be taken forward as 115 three-bedroom homes with associated landscaping and infrastructure.

In a statement the developer wrote: "The proposals are for residential development, formation of a new vehicular access, open space, landscaping and other associated engineering and infrastructure works.

"New footpaths and connections to the nearby footpath network will be integral to the development to offer good links to the surrounding area to help with the movement of people, encouraging a less reliance on the car."

An application for full planning permission will follow in the summer.

So, let's take town epicentre with all transport links and points of interest located few steps away. Then pepper with deep suburban village-ugly-af crappy housing "encouraging a less reliance on the car". This is really a time when calling someone an 'architect' is an insult.

5-6 storys? Underground parking? Street-level restaurants with gardens? Civic plaza in the centre? Nope, no can do, sir, it's Scotland.

Mince as this is, I'm not sure the returns on investment in the middle of Clydebank would have developers jumping at the chance to promote underground parking.

The stuff getting built down by the Titan Crane should be a minimum type of density for a site like this.

Thanks for the 'heads up'.
Will any of the 115 new homes be for social rent?
Does West Dunbartonshire Council have a policy covering the proportions of new private developments which should be 'affordable' ie for midmarket or social rent?
