Final piece of New Gorbals jigsaw falls into place

Planning consent has been granted for the delivery of 356 homes at a 5.1-hectare former iron foundry bounded by Cathcart and Caledonia Road subject to a programme of archaeological works.

Build to rent apartment blocks designed in-house by Craighead Properties, a division of Ediston, will be finished with textured facing brick to meet the 'Glasgow Standard' and affordable housing requirements.

All flats, each of which comes with two bedrooms and three bathrooms, will be suitable for conversion to three-bedroom properties as required through the erection of a simple partition wall. Amenity spaces will be provided by two large amenity spaces designed by RankinFraser, including a central civic space and artwork to help ground the development within the Gorbals.

Awarding consent planners wrote: "The proposal was considered to be in accordance with the Development Plan and there were no material considerations which outweighed the proposal's accordance with the Development Plan."

Powered by roof-mounted solar PV panels and low carbon energy suppliers the estate will limit parking for non-electric cars to seven spaces per block.

The entire development is expected to take two and a half years to complete over five phases, delivering a final built density of 70units/ha.

Each apartment extends to circa 1250 ft2 (116 m2) and comes with a private balcony

NGHA must be banging their heads off a brick wall. 30 years of inspired patronage: the best architects, landscape architects, artists , sculptors and artisans- and now this. A scheme that has more in common with the big box retail unit adjacent than the 30 year effort to create streets, places and buildings of real quality.
The cul-de-sac parking courts and vehicle turning heads are an especially nice reference to current suburban volume housebuilder practice.

The ethos of the new Gorbals is completely gone if this build is aloud to happen . One owner owns all completely corporate corruption
