Ratho courtyard cluster to deliver three bespoke rural homes
February 2 2022
Brownfield land on the western edge of Ratho, Edinburgh, has been identified for the delivery of three bespoke homes close to the Union Canal.
Currently home to 700sq/m of collapsed and dilapidated chicken sheds the site is now under the purview of Haar Architects, who propose to sweep away existing structures in favour of a steading-style cluster of homes.
Each home is to be contemporary in design with a simple pitched roof and an emphasis on natural materials such as stone, timber and slate.
Arranged around a central courtyard homes will turn their backs to the communal space to face views out from the site, with taller living areas set low into the ground to ensure that overall massing remains in line with the existing sheds.
The architects observed: "Our proposals are for a single storey bedroom wing together with a storey and half main living 'hall'. Utilising the topography and setting the taller 'hall' elements lower into the ground and following the gradient of the site minimises the impact of a larger mass on the site."
Each home will benefit from its own private courtyard space.
