Locharbriggs homes emphasise people over parking

Dumfries & Galloway Council has awarded conditional planning consent to the delivery of 89 homes in Locharbriggs, Dumfries, on behalf of a registered social landlord.

Dumfries and Galloway Housing partnership have identified a former haulage depot for the build which seeks to establish a characterful mix of family homes for social rent led by Collective Architecture and main contractor CCG.

Built around a 'green-blue' network of landscaping and SUDS the masterplan works with the existing lie of the land to segregate vehicle traffic along a single 'High Street' separate from active travel routes, connecting a sequence of community squares and spaces.

In their design statement, Collective wrote: "This efficient layout allows for maximum accessibility into the site for vehicles whilst minimising the amount of road carriageway. This north-south street acts as a 'High Street' within the development with nodes of activity at its intersection with east-west green routes.

"The formation of communal courtyards aspires to create places that are more than vessels for car parking, but active and enjoyable spaces for community life."

Further housing is proposed for Catherinefield Farm to the immediate east with hundreds more homes and follows the delivery of 45 homes on the former Lockerbie Academy by the same team.

Up Cycled new town thinking. Look at Livingstone, Cumbernauld, Glanrothes etc - all schemes like this, all with nowhere to park, a slog of a walk with the shopping in the glorious scottish weather!

The funny thing is, looking at the site layout there's actually hunners of parking shown.

The usual stuff really. Emphasising 'people over parking' is easy when you just don't include any cars in the CGIs...

Yip, defiantly people over parking. There are only 183 parking spaces on the site for 89 homes. 158 private spaces and 25 visitor. So in practice more than 2 spaces per property!
There might be a 'high street' in the development and a 'green-blue' (named to appease certain factions of society) network, but that doesn't take away from the fact this is a housing scheme opposite in an industrial/commercial part of the village.
