Architectural illustrators to honour the memory of Mark Baines
January 28 2022
The Alexander Thomson Society has launched a drawing competition in memory of its former chair, Mark Baines, who passed away in 2020.
As someone with a sketchbook always readily at hand Baines paired a love of drawing with architectural conservation and was not averse to poking a little fun at the subject matter, as demonstrated by 'A Thomson Kit of Parts'. Now the society is encouraging others to pick up their pen, pencil or paintbrush in his honour.
In a statement, the society said: "The Alexander Thomson Society is delighted to announce the ‘Remembering Mark Baines’ Architectural Illustration Competition. The late Mark Baines was a founding member and Chair of the Society, an architect, and teacher of architecture at the Macintosh School of Architecture. He continually emphasised the importance of drawing architecture, was never without a sketchbook."
The open brief calls for an architectural illustration of your choice to enter into an exhibition later this year, with a deadline for entries set for 8 April. No computer-aided drawings or photographs are permissible for the competition, which offers a top prize of £300 for the winning work.
