Ullapool 'log cabin' to embody Passive House principles
January 18 2022
A hillside Ullapool home is to be swept aside in favour of two semi-detached properties under plans prepared by North Woods Construction.
The design and build specialists will demolish the unconventional existing log cabin, one of a number of novel designs to be built across Braes of Ullapool in the 1970s and 80s, in favour of a modern home adhering to Passive House principles.
The simple rectilinear design employs high specification timber under a low slung roof in deference to the views and sightlines of neighbours, cantilevering over the hillside within the footprint of the original home.
Outlining their design principles North Woods wrote: "The fundamental objective is to replace the existing dilapidated, inefficient and unhealthy house with a new, comfortable, healthy and highly energy-efficient building.
"As with the existing house, the fenestration of the proposed new dwelling is heavily focused on the South elevation, this is consistent with an energy-efficient approach and helps maximise benefit from the views while offering privacy to the occupants and neighbours. The materials and finishes of the building have been selected to reference the 'log cabin' element of the existing building."
Built using a thermally efficient I-Joist structure the design incorporates significant thermal mass within the floor to help regulate temperature.

File this one under 'not as bad as what's there'. It will likely be demolished and replaced itself in 20 years.
Looks Disney+ and disnae hae any design merit.
