'Showpiece' distillery planned for the Dornoch Firth

Midfearn Distillery Company have exhibited plans for the practices latest distillery and 'showpiece' warehouse situated at Easter Fearn overlooking the Dornoch Firth.

Midfearn Distillery and its associated maturation and bottling facilities aim to be carbon neutral in operation and construction, minimising energy demand through the use of cross & stack ventilation, solar shading and thermal mass.

A design team led by Blyth & Blyth with Michael Lairds Architects and Scott Hobbs Planning are helping to make this vision a reality by guiding the consultation and planning process.

In a statement, the team wrote: "New processes and technologies negate the need for old forms of ventilation and exhausting - giving us the ability for more flexible layouts and structures that can celebrate the progress the industry has made.

"We do not want to clothe it in medieval pastiche or pretend it is a distillery from the past. We feel there is enough original history within the vicinity of the site to keep any visitor happy."

A proposal of application notice has already been filed with The Highland Council with a full planning application expected in the spring for a tentative site start in August.
