Royal Blind School housing initiative gets underway
November 22 2021
Work to redevelop the C-listed Royal Blind School and Braille Press in Newington, Edinburgh, is now well underway with the refurbishment of the historic building to form 21 apartments and a further 27 new build properties.
Newington Residences is located within the Craigmillar Park conservation area and is being overseen by Michael Laird Architects on behalf of CALA Homes (East), repurposing a historic campus that has lain vacant since 2014.
Following directly after the conversion of the nearby Boroughmuir High School the work will see a sequence of townhouses rise within the landscaped grounds as well as the conversion of a former gatehouse into a two-bedroom home.
Sales director Philip Hogg said: “We believe the attractive renovation at the heart will give the development real character and charm, while preserving a historic local landmark.”
Completion of the first homes is expected as early as next summer.
