Scaffold shroud signals long-awaited Hamilton Mausoleum repairs

One of South Lanarkshire's most significant buildings, the Hamilton Mausoleum, has been shrouded by a 24m-high scaffold in anticipation of long-awaited repairs.
JR Scaffold Services have built a circular perimeter scaffold around the cultural landmark to facilitate a programme of repairs by Hamilton Mausoleum Trust, South Lanarkshire Council to address water ingress and a deteriorating fabric.
Erected in consultation with Historic Scotland the access gantry will permit stone restoration and lead replacement works to restore the dome-shaped tomb, built as the final resting place of the 10th Duke of Hamilton, to its former glory.
John Jack, contracts manager at The JR Group, said: “Over four weeks, we built a scaffold structure around the entire perimeter of the building including the dome, along with a full-height loading bay, staircase and hoist bay. The scaffold will allow for important works to preserve the Hamilton Mausoleum, which has been showing signs of water ingress.
"Vital repair works have now begun and when completed will breathe new life into the landmark, helping to safeguard its future.”
Hamilton Mausoleum stands on the grounds of the demolished Hamilton palace and has been subject to a landscape-led GIA competition to improve its compromised setting.
