Ayrshire Hospice to strengthen palliative care with new inpatient unit
September 24 2021
The Ayrshire Hospice has applied to refurbish and redevelop its premises at 35 Racecourse Road, Ayr, to provide a new inpatient unit and social space.
Led by project manager Turner & Townsend, with Austin-Smith:Lord Architects, services engineer Atelier 10 and structural engineer Struer, the space will provide a palliative care environment to take care of people's physical and mental wellbeing.
The expansion will enable the hospice to co-locate onto a single site, establishing a new public face to the community through a multi-use social hub while retaining as much of the existing heritage fabric as possible, namely a B-listed Regency villa, coach house and dovecote.
In their design statement, the architects observed: "Two contrasting external materials are proposed for the Hospice’s In-Patient Unit extension into the garden. A ‘cooler’ grey standing seam panelling for the few surfaces not immediately available to patients, and a warmer timber cladding for the majority of external surfaces which patients use, such as seating areas and the individual room patios."
"An increased amount of glazing and curtain walling in the elevations aims to provide a more welcoming front to the main entrance setting, as well as a certain degree of transparency that allows views towards the Hub’s courtyard and the western edge of the Hospice’s gardens that is visible to the public."
Subject to the necessary approvals work could begin in the spring of next year.
