Site start made at £55m Maybole 'super school'

Work has begun to deliver a £55m 'super school' in Maybole, South Ayrshire with contractor Morgan Sindall making a start on site of South Ayrshire Council's biggest school to date.

The Community Education Campus is set to open its doors in August 2023 and will amalgamate 1,370 pupils on a new site at the existing Carrick Academy, drawing together students from St Cuthbert's Primary as well as the non-denominational Cairn & Gardenrose primaries as well as Early years provision.

The design has been led by architects BDP and will include two sports pitches and a swimming pool which will be made available for public use.

In a design statement, the practice wrote: "The use of galleried access and bridges create a stimulating visual environment whilst providing passive supervision of pupil movement. Opportunities have been created for social interaction throughout the school, inside and outside to encourage a lively and united learning community. The feature Hellerup stairs will provide greater flexibility of space and can be used as additional assembly and performance space."

Maybole town centre is being reimagined as an active travel corridor to encourage people back to the historic High Street.
