Wolfcraig Distillery to court Stirling motorists
September 7 2021
Opfer Logan Architects have formalised proposals for a new distillery at Craigforth, Stirling, inspired by the wolves that once prowled the land.
Wolfcraig will produce 2m litres of whisky and premium spirits per year, serving locals and international visitors from an on-site whisky bar offering panoramic views of Stirling Castle. Part of a broader redevelopment of the Craigforth Campus, led by Ambassador, the distillery will sit alongside the M80 motorway with a fully glazed stills house to put the inner workings of whisky production on show to passing motorists.
In a design statement, the architects said: "The dominant architectural feature of a Scottish Whisky Distillery is the ‘Cupola’ which is so traditionally ingrained as to be instinctively recognisable. Distillation kilns produce large amounts of heat which must be ventilated and towards the end of the 19th Century, Charles Doig designed a ventilator capping that functioned as a chimney funnel to draw heat away. This was very successful and during the late Victorian boom in the industry, ‘Doig’s Cupola’ was widely used and became iconic.
"The distillery design is therefore based on a square floor plan with pyramidal slated roof that flares and slopes upwards to be capped by a contemporary version of a ‘Doig’s Cupola’."
The design team includes Will Rudd Davidson, Armour Cost Consultants and Arka Design Studio.
