300-bed Maldron Hotel opens in Glasgow city centre

Dalata Hotel Group has completed the four-star Maldron Hotel in Glasgow city centre, delivering 300 beds ahead of the looming COP26 climate conference.

The £40m Renfrew Street build, by Consarc Design Group, features a residents gym, bar, restaurant and commands a prominent corner spot overlooking Renfrew Street.

Finished in a combination of brick, cast stone and bronze-effect rain screen panels the hotel is being touted as a vote of confidence in the city's tourism industry.

Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, commented: “As we approach COP26 later this year and prepare for the World Cycling Championships in 2023, the Maldron Glasgow City Hotel will complement the city’s portfolio of hospitality businesses ready to cater to both leisure and business guests alike."

Dalata is also delivering a four-star Clayton Hotel at Custom House Quay.

Big unit -- bit of a looker / offers hope but also highlights the number of gap sites in the city and the stuttering efforts to fill them.

In an ideal world this would be part of a recognised hotel district -- one of many in the city -- that taps into an increasing demand for short term accommodation.

Unfortunately the area has some way to go as it presents a gap toothed smile to the world.

It is progress so here's hoping there are more on the way -- Sauchiehall Street needs their occupants cash / spending power.

A bit of public realm wouldn't go amiss either.

The dullest looking hotel to open in Glasgow for decades, both inside and out. Glasgow doesn't need a 300 bedroom factory.

Good grief, why are all Glasgow developments so dismal? I thought architecture in Edinburgh was bad!
