University of Dundee life sciences hub trailed

The University of Dundee with Oberlanders Architects has come forward with plans for a Tay Cities Deal Innovation Hub, one of four new buildings to be delivered within the Technopole campus in the Blackness area of the city.

Accommodating spin-off life science companies the purpose-built hub will comprise 4,433sq/m of laboratory and office space in two wings of accommodation flanking a central atrium accessible from an enclosed collonade connecting to landscaping.

In a materials statement, Oberlanders observed: "The western edge of the site is bordered by a light industrial area with warehouses and workshops. The laboratory wing of the building faces these, and addresses the harder urban edge with a palette of brick cladding and punched window openings, the solidity and brick being a nod to the industrial past of the site.

"The remainder of the building, facing into the campus itself has a different treatment, with a mix metal panel cladding and curtain wall. This is both reflective of the different nature of the internal spaces and of the more open and softer edge looking into the campus as a whole."

Located on the site of the former Ashton Works textile mill the work will encompass plots C and D, with excess soil excavated from levelling plot C used to landscape the latter.
