Edinburgh extends affordable housing provision with 140 homes
May 21 2021
The City of Edinburgh Council has opened a public consultation into its plans to provide 140 affordable and energy-efficient homes at Muirhouse, Edinburgh.
A design team comprising Hart Builders, Smith Scott Mullan Architects and Hardies intend to deliver the bulk of the new housing on the site of the former Silverlea Care Home, with a replacement football pavilion (subject of a separate application) located to the north.
Located on the periphery of the Granton Waterfront development area the work will establish a new gateway from Muirhouse Parkway with a new green corridor offering direct access to Marine Drive to the south.
Incorporating around 20 homes specifically designed for wheelchair users a variety of accommodation will be built ranging from apartments to colony-style maisonettes with taller blocks positioned to the front.
Designated as net-zero carbon the development will employ an air source heat pump farm, providing low carbon electric heating from a centralised communal energy centre.
Care will also be taken to retain mature trees with new planting, hedgerows and flowering plants contributing to biodiversity.
A full planning application should be filed by the summer.
