Glasgow's Grand Central hotel back in business following refurbishment

HLM Architects have delivered the refurbishment of voco Grand Central, formerly the Great British Railway Hotel, to coincide with a phased return of the leisure economy.
The Victorian edifice has been remodelled by IHG Hotels & Resorts during lockdown to incorporate a new signature interior design for the voco brand as well as a dedicated kitchen serving the champagne central bar.
The multi-million-pound refurbishment encompassed meeting and events spaces as well as all 184 bedrooms and hallways to create a unified look for the establishment while working within the confines of the buildings category A listing.
In deference to the historic fabric, a corridor ceiling raft has been introduced for guest services, ensuring features such as cornices and stone archways remain unmolested. Interventions also include the installation of air conditioning, secondary glazing and lighting as well as all-new signage, furnishings and artwork.
Jamie Wilson, director at HLM Architects, said: “Understanding the voco brand and developing these requirements into the refurbishment allowed us to create a design that enabled the building to express its individuality and unique appearance, whilst providing a modernised hotel for guests and visitors.”
Created by London based Goddard Littlefair, the interior design focuses on deep blues offset by signature voco yellow, with feature walls in soft pink.
