Landfill woodland to green Winchburgh with 15,000 trees
March 30 2021
Work to plant around 15,000 trees and shrubs in Winchburgh, 14 miles west of Edinburgh, has begun in earnest with phase one of the mammoth landscaping exercise scheduled to open by the summer.
Allison Enterprises will deliver the new Auldcathie District Park to designs by Optimised Environments with planting complemented by an outdoor play park. The £1m project will transform 40 acres of land in the initial phase alone to form a community woodland bisected by two kilometres of paths and trails connected to the Union Canal.
This will bring the former Auldcathie landfill site back into productive use following extensive reclamation and capping works.
John Hamilton, CEO of Winchburgh Developments said: “Auldcathie District Park is one of the ‘jewels in the crown’ of our masterplan for Winchburgh and it’s fantastic to see landscaping work beginning and the first trees going in. We’re entering a particularly exciting phase of the masterplan now, with work on many projects continuing at pace including the canal marina which is due to be completed in spring, the new schools’ campus and five housebuilders currently on-site building new homes.”
When complete in 2022 the full park will extend to 85 acres with viewing areas on higher ground permitting sight of the Forth Bridges.
The community woodland forms an integral part of the Winchburgh masterplan which will deliver 3,800 homes on a 352-hectare site.
