Eco-makeover to transform Galston school

An East Ayrshire Primary is set to become the first school in the UK to be Passivhaus EnerPHit certified, a refurbishment standard for existing buildings that cannot match the energy efficiency of a new build.

Hamson Barron Smith (HBS) has been appointed by East Ayrshire Council to upgrade the fabric of St Sophia's Primary School in Galston with the architects given a remit to slash carbon dioxide emissions.

HBS associate director Sarah Lewis said: “By adopting the EnerPHit standard, we are ensuring that environmental excellence is at the heart of this project, which will hopefully pave the way for other schools to see how it is possible to achieve significant energy savings.

“We look forward to seeing this project come to life, with the potential of achieving some of the largest energy reductions ever seen in a UK school.”

In the process, the eco-friendly facelift will lower running costs and permit greater flexibility of operation.
