Additional support needs school gets underway in Livingston
March 5 2021
BAM Construction and Hub South East have commenced delivery of a 1,900sq/m additional support needs building within the grounds of James Young High School, Livingston.
Designed in-house by West Lothian Council Construction Services Cedarbank School will meet the needs of children with moderate learning difficulties and social communication needs and incorporates a variety of external learning and play environments.
Prioritising the use of warm, tactile and natural materials the school will be entered from a central shared space with provision for custom breakout furniture alongside circulation routes to maximise floor space.
Explaining the outdoor learning ethos the authority wrote: "Outdoor break out spaces to the front of the school, are directly accessible from the classrooms and provide space and flexibility for the pupils to take a moment outside without leaving the lesson, or for staff to hold lessons outside on a nice day in a fully secure environment.
"A large allotment replaces the existing space which is thoroughly enjoyed by the pupils currently, and offers places to grow fruit and vegetables, learn gardening skills, as well as a sheltered space to sit or hold outdoor lessons."
The £7m school is a standalone facility that will accommodate up to 130 pupils when it opens its doors in 2022.
