Monifieth to Broughty Ferry active travel route underway
March 3 2021
An active travel route linking Monifeith to Broughty Ferry is on the cusp of approval with Dundee's city development committee scheduled to consider the plan on Monday.
This would see Mill Street cease to be a public road, given over instead to pedestrian and cycle movements between the two coastal suburbs, with vehicles rerouted via Brook Street.
Led by Nicoll Russell Studio and Sustrans the £9m project centres on a new link connecting Windmill Gardens to Broughty Ferry's Castle Green.
Committee convener Mark Flynn said: “Improved paths and street lighting, in this case between Stannergate and Douglas Terrace and the Balmossie Street to Seven Arches Link, will also demonstrate our physical commitment to ensuring that the right infrastructure is in place to support and encourage people out of their fossil fuel burning vehicles and on to more active ways of getting around.
“Closing Mill Street, while maintaining access to Broughty Ferry Beach Car Park from Esplanade provides a vehicle-free connection from Windmill Gardens to Castle Green which allows the creation of a cycle/walking/running shared path along the Esplanade away from vehicles."
As part of a broader flood protection scheme, the work will widen the current coastal route to accommodate new seating, improved accessibility and a tandem cycle path.
McLaughlin & Harvey have already begun work on a shared pedestrian and cycle path running the length of the waterfront
