Demolition to pave the way for new Ayr Station gateway

A disused office block in Ayr town centre is to be demolished to clear the way for future redevelopment.

An exclusion zone around Burns House will be put in place shortly before the building is dismantled floor by floor to form a new open space at Burns Statue Square in front of Ayr Station.

A spokesperson for South Ayrshire Council told Urban Realm: “We are currently exploring opportunities which will enhance and develop this important gateway into the town when the building is removed.”

Latterly in use as council offices, Burns House feeds into an ongoing debate around the future of the B-listed Ayr Station, which was declared structurally unsound in 2019.

Discussions are ongoing with an unnamed potential buyer which could see the French Renaissance styled station converted into a boutique hotel and student accommodation.

Encouraging news for the town. This is a great opportunity to repurpose Burns Statue Square and its relationship with the station to provide a high quality gateway including new civic public realm around Burns Statue. Good luck to all concerned
