Blackness mill to bear 361-student beds on its shoulders

A brownfield site in Dundee city centre could accommodate 361 student beds, above the retained facade of a former mill.

63 Brown Street is situated in the Blackness Conservation Area of the city, adjoining the A-listed Tay Works complex and subdivided into four commercial units.

Building owner Total Business Furniture with Gylemuir Ltd propose to retain the single-storey facade with a seven-storey masonry structure above set back from Tay Mills.

Combining cream and grey brickwork the student halls are defined by a double-height glazed reception, framed by a bright galvanised metal screen punching out of the window apertures.

Amenity will be provided in the form of a roof terrace and communal courtyard with an artist to be employed to enhance public spaces.

Led by CAG Architects this solution ensures the gable remains legible from the street while reinforcing the building line.

Oooft...I'd pay good money to see glass like that in real life, but unfortunately that's not what windows look like.
