Sporting success at Sporsnis
September 24 2008
Sporsnis, from Anderson Associates, is a community inspired project which has taken over twelve years to bring to fruition. It is located to the north west corner of the Isle of Lewis in the very exposed and remote area of Ness. This area is frequently subject to extreme weather conditions which played a strong role in determining design solutions. The £2m+ facility is built on two levels and incorporates a large sports hall capable of accommodating three badminton courts. Arrayed around this are community spaces, training rooms, bowling alley, croileagan, fitness suite and associated toilet and changing facilities. The entire facility is linked to the existing primary and two year secondary local school.
Materials employed include portal steel frames, composite cladding panels, traditional cavity blockwork and external timber cladding. The building is serviced through a wide variety of renewable sources that include photo-voltaics, solar panels, aero-generators and ground sourced heat pumps.
This facility will have a substantial impact on the local community and it is a facility with which that same community has taken great pride in delivering.
