Winchburgh Marina canal quarter breaks ground
September 11 2020
A sod-cutting ceremony has taken place at Winchburgh Marina with engineering firm I&H Brown moving on-site to deliver a new canal marina 14 miles west of Edinburgh.
Phase one work will see a marina basin carved out of the landscape, ushering in a variety of pontoons, moorings and facilities to cater for canal users from spring next year.
The new marina has been designed by Michael Laird Architects to incorporate 20 berths when complete in addition to associated leisure and commercial spaces in time for the 200th anniversary of the Union Canal. Looking further ahead the marina will sit at the heart of a new town centre offering direct pedestrian connections to the canal towpath and the new Daisy Park.
Catherine Topley, CEO of Scottish Canals, said: “The start of works at Winchburgh Marina cements Scottish Canals place within this historic village and demonstrates our commitment to regenerating Scotland’s canal network. This fantastic development will create new and exciting opportunities for people to live and work on our canals for years to come."
In tandem with the marina, it is proposed to erect 64 apartments and townhouses set amid landscaped grounds, the first of some 3,800 homes ultimately planned for the area
