Rangers fan zone to mark club's 150th anniversary

Rangers Football Club has brought forward plans to erect a purpose-built fan zone, incorporating a club museum, cafe, venue and retail over two floors.

Replacing the current Edmiston House the facility is intended to provide a pre and post-match experience for fans while providing an all-year events space for up to 1,300 people.

Managing director, Stewart Robertson, said: "The demolition of the existing Edmiston House this autumn permits the re-orientation of the new building towards the axis of the stadium, and closer to Edmiston Drive.

"We ensured the building was designed to complement, but not compete with, our iconic stadium. The internals on the ground floor can be easily adapted, and the spaces can accommodate many types of functions and events."

Rangers are working to ensure that the venue will be up and running by the first half of 2022, in time for the club's 150th anniversary.

Land at the Rangers owned Albion car park will be sold off to pay for the venture

Haven't they got 142 years to go until their 150th anniversary? I'm sure they will have a design sorted out by then.

Kwality Keppie....

Agree #2. How can a company that’s only 8 years old celebrate a 150th anniversary? 150 months maybe? Maybe this magpie entity will survive 10yrs IAR

Or maybe it will take 142 years to raise the funding :)

#4 - I'm not sure how many face-painters would need to be ripped off to pay for such a development....

Yes we can debate Newco and Oldco until the cows come home but will the architects fees get paid on time especially important in the current economic climate. Mildly amused to note the photoshop guy ignoring the opportunity to re-instate the 'Keep Clear' road markings in image one. Surely such a high profile project deserves that at least.

Don't wish to enter into the "banter" above but anything that helps the general area around either of the big 3 stadiums in Glasgow should be welcomed. These venues are visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year and their importance to society is huge. Just hope that "contemporary" design sits OK alongside what is a fantastic main facade at Ibrox.

Edmiston House was only good for hauling down and this is the right move in order to maximise the development space.

However the design is disappointing, especially when you consider the recent Albion housing concept. It took account of context in terms of materiality and referenced language of the historic main stand. That had time and thought spent on it.

A bland grey box is a bland grey box no matter the wallpaper you stick on it. Totally uninspiring from Keppie given the potential here.

Given that there is no TV money in Scottish football I'd love to know where Rangers are getting the money from for all these multi-million pound signings and new developments like this, either they're being secretly bankrolled by someone rich or they're building up unsustainable amounts of debt again.
