Robertson Construction has been awarded the contract to build a 500-pupil replacement Milltimber School in Aberdeen to designs by Scott Brownrigg.

The £16m school will rise on the Oldfold Farm development on the western outskirts of the city, introducing 14 classrooms arranged around distinctive 'pocket spaces' directly accessible from each classroom as places for play, relaxation and external learning.

This approach sees three teaching pavilions protrude from the bulk of the school-based on a similar arrangement at Stoneywood School, with each space housing back-to-back classrooms along a shared break-out space.

In their design statement, the architects observed: "The design of pocket spaces respects the need for personal space, and caters for the different spaces and opportunities children need for social interaction. These offer a stillness and calm, making use of colour, texture and seasonal planting."

The full project team also comprises Faithful & Gould, Fairhurst, TUV SUD and Wardell.
