Mount Florida public realm improvements go to public consultation

Mount Florida Community Council has opened a community consultation to improve the Letherby Triangle, surplus land located at the junction of Cathcart Road and Carmunnock Road beside Mount Florida Primary.

Following the receipt of funding from Sustrans, the council is now developing proposals with ERZ to form a new civic space suitable for public gatherings and events while encouraging greater pedestrian and cycle activity by closing one side of the junction to traffic.

Initial thoughts include the introduction of new planting, seating and lighting, enhanced by relocating the current taxi rank, bus stop and parking spaces.

These environmental improvements form part of a range of concepts being put forward utilising a range of materials and styles to establish the most popular approach.

Specific ideas include the introduction of terrazzo artwork inspired by tenement staircases and a border bench defining the Cathcart Road street edge.

Efforts have been underway for a number of years to improve the space

It’s taken about 5 years for these ‘plans’ for a postage-sized site to come to fruition...and this is the result?

To think the community council want to take ownership of the nearby bowling club... it’ll be a jungle if they have their way attracting local riff-raff which is the principle reason driving their objections in the first place! How will those local residents cope!

Do I detect a vested interest in your name #1? It's brilliant the community are getting involved in the provision of local amenity and saving their greenspace from voracious and unsympathetic development.

My mother Winnie McCallum was a member of Mount Florida Community Council and the Cathcart Over 50's club for many years. I have photos of the "triangle" from years ago when it was cleared up and flowers planted and seating installed. Also photos of the Mount Florida Gala Days. If someone from the Community Council would like to get in touch I would be delighted to pass on all the photo albums.
