Aberdeen boosts nursery provision with Duthie Park facility

An expansion of nursery provision in Aberdeen has been given the all-clear with approval for the conversion and extension of a B-listed former Gate Lodge at Duthie Park.
Part of the city's early learning and childcare expansion programme the woks have been entrusted to Halliday Fraser Munro who will oversee the transformation of the lodge for its new role. This will see a subservient pavilion block erected, conjoined to the lodge via a glazed link, opening out onto an external play area with extensive glazing.
Detailing this approach in a planning statement the architects wrote: "The main sections of the walls are shown clad with dark grey standing seam metal cladding, with a metal-clad tapered flat roof separated from the walls by the use of clerestory glazing panels intended to create the effect of the roof floating lightly over the walls.
"Feature windows highlighted in bright colours punctuate the South West elevation, giving a sense of playfulness. The glazed link has a partially solid flat roof for shading and to accommodate services. This portion is set back from the edges and the glazing returned horizontally so that the roof edge remains visually light."
Construction work is expected to be underway in the autumn for occupation by the following summer.
