Stubborn gap-site to host Gorbals landmark
June 29 2020
Planners have handed the all-clear to New Gorbals Housing Association in their bid to make good on long-held plans to establish a new landmark for the district.
Earmarked for a significant new build from as far back as the 1991 Crown Street masterplan Northgate has remained stubbornly vacant but will now play host to 33 flats for social rent, signifying the areas ongoing regeneration on approach from the city centre.
In a statement, planners wrote: "The format of development proposed, whilst taller than the established datum of the wider area, reflects the intentions for the site to deliver a landmark building. The proposals have been appropriately scaled for its immediate context and have been designed to suitably respond to all public vistas.
"The proposals will follow the established building line on Crown Street, which will ensure that adequate separation distances are achieved between opposing residential windows without any adverse impacts on daylight for neighbouring flats.
"Whilst the properties will be marketed as not having car parking provision, should any car parking demands arise, these can be accommodated in the associations existing private parking supply without any adverse impacts for their other residents."
Finished in buff brick the Page\Park designed properties rise to a literal 'crown' of monopitch roofs, affording elevated vistas to the city.
