Vital Turriff Academy upgrades initiated by Aberdeenshire Council
June 5 2020
Aberdeenshire Council is to undertake an extensive programme of repairs and refurbishment to Turriff Academy to improve both the building fabric and the quality of education provided.
The £1.6m revamp centres on the dilapidated North Wing on School Lane and a gymnasium to improve window and façade performance while introducing a range of new and upgraded facilities. Works will see single glazing replaced with energy-efficient double-glazing alongside replacement cladding, render and repointing of a granite base course.
Outlining their approach the authority wrote: “The concept for cladding and colouring is to give a connection to the red warmth and random rubble patterns of Turriff sandstone that is widely used in the town centre. Shades of red and grey strip Equitone fibre cement cladding are intended to replace the chequerboard concrete and column enclosures.
“Materials are sourced from a simple palette and intend to blend with the existing street and townscape. These panels are 12mm thick, lightweight, strong and have the highest fire safety standard.”
The current building was built in the modernist style in the late 1960s and carries elements of Art Deco.
