School sports pavilion earns RSA showcase

Competition-winning proposals for new sports pavilion for an undisclosed central belt school have been included in the first online-only RSA annual exhibition.

The invited competition saw 7N Architects emerge victorious with a multi-purpose design combining an events space and teaching facilities alongside spectator stands.

Sandwiched on elevated ground between the schools rugby and hockey pitches the facility will provide will provide clear views of both with players benefitting from direct changing room access below by way of a dedicated tunnel.

In a statement 7N Architects wrote: “The sheltering timber structure of the pavilion’s roof, which was inspired by the pitched roofscape of the existing school, hovers over the multi-purpose event space and terraces.

“The event space is designed to accommodate a range of sports classes, functions and events and can be opened up to the surrounding sheltered terraces allowing pupils and visitors to spill out and soak up the atmosphere on the playing fields with extensive views to the landscape beyond.”

The competition took place last year but the client has elected not to proceed with the pavilion at the present time.

A design competition where the winner could have been picked from their back catalogue without wasting the other applicants time, then client then decides not to proceed.... what a cliché!
