Final phase of Pollokshields estate redevelopment goes in for planning

Jmarchitects have come forward with final phase plans to build 120 homes at St Andrews Drive, Pollokshields, on behalf of Southside Housing Association.

Phase one of the development completed in summer of last year with site clearance having already taken place for the second phase of works. A third and final phase of housing will require demolition of the last remaining 1960s deck access block later this year.

Retaining as many of the existing mature trees as possible the masterplan picks up on the original form of the site when occupied by 20 individual villas stood on the site before being swept away for higher density blocks.

Extending the ‘urban villa’ strategy of before the latest extension will add a new element to the mix, a ‘contemporary tenement’ situated on the junction of St Andrew’s Drive and Shields Road. The site constraints for phase three dictate a linear arrangement of stacked maisonettes and more traditional apartments.

Promoting the proposed scale and form the architects wrote: “The variation in storey height across the blocks is a direct reference back to the adjacent villa massing. A variety of block types will be designed, with brick adopted to echo the colour palette of the existing context. We believe this will reinforce a response which proposes an appropriate scale and form.”

A palette of Siberian Larch timber cladding, pre-cast concrete and buff brick ranging in tone from light to dark has been chosen for the build.

Wow another piece of architectural wonderment. More ticky tacky little boxes. No articulation and really no design at all. Totally utterly boring and only slightly better than the previous deck housing
