Restaurant resuscitates historic west end garage

An A-listed garage has brought a taste of Thailand to Glasgow’s West End courtesy of Mosaic Architecture + Design who have converted the basement into a £1m themed restaurant.
Ka Pao sits in the bowels of the former Botanic Gardens Garage on Vinicombe Street, bringing a 120-seat dining area and adjoining bar on behalf of Scoop Restaurants.
Stuart Black, head of interior design at Mosaic said: “Thanks to existing and reclaimed white ceramic brick walls and a full elevation of crittal style glazing running down the length of the restaurant, the space is unusually bright and airy for a basement unit.
“An industrial mix of white-washed concrete soffits, galvanized steel services, poured cement floors softened with live planting, reclaimed furniture, decorative and intelligent lighting contrast with bold pops of colour, earthy hand-fired and glazed tiles, creating a vibrant colourful and richly illuminated interior that has both a juxtapose and always-been there relationship with the building.”
Retaining much of the existing interior the light-touch remodel follows on from the Ox and Finch completed by the same team.
The design team had to overcome the logistical and technical challenge of carving out a restaurant from an existing basement
