Hotel reinvention signals the end of an era for Jenners
November 26 2019
Jenners department store is set for radical transformation under an ambitious blueprint being drawn up by its owner, Anders Holch Povlsen.
The Danish billionaire has recruited David Chipperfield Architects to transform the Princes Street building into a 10,000sq/m hotel, complemented by a rooftop bar, restaurant and private terrace to make the most of views to the castle.
A further 7,000sq/m of retail, cafes and shops will complement the new mix of uses with an active frontage along Princes Street.
Under the plan, the A-listed façade and grand hall would be fully restored, including the reinstatement of lost original features, while a 1960s extension fronting Rose Street would be given a contemporary facelift.
To facilitate this work Jenners itself is expected to relocate elsewhere in the city around 2020-21, possibly to the St James Centre.
