Torry Community Hub plans finalised
November 8 2019
Aberdeen City Council with Halliday Fraser Munro Architects has brought forward plans for a new community hub in Torry as part of a broader complex which will also include a primary school and early years facility.
Intended to act as a focal point for the local area the hub will combine classrooms with a GP surgery, library, gym and café to help promote civic pride, social inclusion and lifelong learning within joined teaching and community wings.
Located on the site of the former Torry Academy the hub will be clad in Rockpanel and cement board above a brick base course with a bright main entrance located at the intersection of Grampian Place and Tullos Circle next to a paved plaza and community garden.
In a concept statement attached with their application, the architects wrote: “The building responds to the existing character of Torry both in appearance and architectural style. By using dark brick at a low level and a ‘granite effect’ cladding panel to the public face there is reference is made to existing site condition.”
Early years facilities will be located at ground level with secure access to outdoor play areas with older pupils located on the floor above, which also has an open-plan learning zone.

Ah ha... that explains it all!! It's a sad day when architects deliberately design buildings to look crap just so they blend in with their surroundings. Zero imagination!
