CALA Homes are progressing the transformation of the former Boroughmuir High School to apartments with the award of a £900k preservation contract to refurbish all 430 windows.

Richardson & Starling will strip each sash and case window to repair rotted and damaged timbers, fit draught-proofing and install new double-glazed units before fitting the reconditioned windows with new weights and ironmongery.

This will be carried out in addition to preservation repairs to roofing timbers to facilitate the B-listed school’s conversion and extension to form 104 apartments.

Philip Hogg, sales and marketing director at Cala Homes (East), commented: “Given the sensitive nature of this refurbishment project, we have carefully selected specialist subcontractors, some of which are local, who bring extensive experience and expertise to this development.”

The £20.4m project is being overseen by Michael Laird Architects and follows the school’s relocation to a new build facility nearby.

Built between 1911 and 1914 Boroughmuir employs an innovative steel frame construction overseen by architect John Alexander Carfrae.

So £900k to refurbish windows that will be 50% less efficient than new ones. Say hello to big heating bills and condensation....all in the name of 'conservation'.....just saying like.

#5 naw! The plaster can be ground down and mixed into the new batch, no need to skip. Well that's what I used to do. Bosh!

We declined this job as the specification could only be achieved by breaching the Construction Product Regulations. Buyers beware!
