Long-standing Inverness gap site earmarked for new hotel
September 11 2019
Inverness waterfront is to play host to a new hotel on the site of the former city baths at Glebe Street, which has lain derelict since its demolition in 1999.
The Glebe Street location is bounded by the busy Friars Bridge offering open views across the River Ness, which will be addressed directly by a public ‘plinth’ of riverfront restaurants and bars.
Proposed by Vastint and Keppie Design the hotel seeks to mediate between a civic scale fronting the bridge to a more domestic design facing the city centre with bedrooms stacked above, all finished in a palette of buff ceramic tiles above a rose-toned ceramic tile base.
In a planning statement, Keppie wrote: “This proposed, restrained material palate, acts as a calming backdrop to a series of vernacular devices which articulate the elevations and create interest, whilst allowing the proposals to sit comfortably within its context - repairing this dilapidated gateway into the city centre.”
The L-plan AC Hotel by Marriott will house 177 rooms.
