Citizens Theatre redevelopment moves on-site
September 9 2019
Kier Regional Building Scotland has moved on-site with the redevelopment of Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre to deliver a comprehensive £21.5m overhaul of the B-listed venue.
Tracing its history back over 140 years the theatre has become increasingly outdated with poor accessibility and ageing infrastructure.
Planned works will introduce level access from the street for the first time while introducing a new bar, café and studio spaces – all while protecting the Victorian auditorium and other period features.
At the heart of this reimagining will be a 152-seat performance studio.
James Nelmes, Associate Director, Bennetts Associates, said: “The project will deliver spaces and experiences full of character reflecting the unique and idiosyncratic nature of the Citz. Much of the hidden world behind the scenes will be accessible to audiences and visitors for the first time.”
The two-year build programme will see the reimagined theatre open its doors in 2021.
