New hotel in store for Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street

Mosaic Architecture + Design have filed detailed plans for the conversion of a department store on Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street dating from 1929 to form a 112-bedroom budget hotel and restaurant.
The £12m Qtel branded hotel has been conceived by Manor Property Group as a means to revitalise the Art Deco landmark while adding a rooftop extension to provide additional bedrooms and converting the basement to form a private gym and meeting rooms.
Augmenting the recently completed Willow Tea Rooms remodel and expansion of the Sauchiehall Centre the hotel would benefit from the Avenues initiative.
Mosaic director Stephen Mallon said: “The design is one we feel is respectful of the existing building and context, using a traditional mansard form re-interpreted in a modern fashion with new materiality. While researching the existing property, we discovered that the now-demolished building that sat on the site previously was Glasgow’s very own ‘Balmoral Hotel’; something of which I was unaware of before our involvement, but which seems to provide a neat symmetry for this project.”
Mosaic is currently on-site with the delivery of a new Yotel on Argyle Street.
