Pert-Bruce Construction and housebuilder the FM Group have broken ground on a 450-home development at the former Sunnyside Royal Hospital, Montrose.
The former psychiatric hospital is credited with being one of the first public asylum’s in the world and will sit at the heart of a £100m housing development spanning 64 acres of land.
The historic B-listed hospital building and C-listed water tower will be remodelled by Garry Adam Architect to provide a mix of apartments and town homes, surrounded by new family homes arranged across two distinct areas.
Craig Bruce from Pert Bruce Construction commented: “We are passionate about building quality developments that preserve our country’s heritage. In this context we worked closely with the local community and planners to develop proposals that maintain the history and heritage of the former hospital and natural environment along with consideration to both existing and new communities.”
As part of the works the original recreation hall will be transformed into a community facility, connected to the wider grounds by a new network of paths and cycleways.
