Atkins complete 2,000sq/m lab space for UWS Hamilton
August 22 2019
The University of the West of Scotland have taken possession of new science labs providing laboratory space for researchers operating in the fields of sports science, biochemistry, physiotherapy and zoology.
Stretching to 2,000sq/m the Atkins designed lab space is a key component of the university’s new Hamilton campus, offering bright, flexible and spacious accommodation for 4,000 students.
In a statement the practice wrote: “Atkins’ use of 3D modelling enabled UWS to make an informed, early sign-off on the project. By employing high quality visualisations and 3D flythroughs of the design, the project team and the university could better visualise and plan the project, minimising time on site and disruption for teachers and students.
“To create a research-driven, innovative learning and teaching space. Circulation within a very tight floor plan is aided by signage incorporated into the natural timber finishes, high quality integrated lockers and carefully positioned breakout areas.”
Throughout the build Atkins collaborated closely with contractors FES + AKP together with consultants Harley Haddow and Faithful+Gould to deliver the laboratory with minimal disruption to teachers and staff.
