Irvine pins hopes on ‘Great Harbour’ tourism masterplan

North Ayrshire Council has progressed plans to position Irvine Harbourside and the Ardeer Peninsula as a tourism destination by partnering with landowner and harbour authority the NPL Group to formulate an overarching masterplan for the area.

‘Great Harbour’ seeks to maximise the potential of the coastal region by enacting several proposals, including the creation of a new link between the train station and beach, establish a new maritime visitor attraction and find a new use for the former Big idea building.

Councillor Alex Gallagher commented: “With the right mix of public and private investment, Irvine Harbourside and the Ardeer Peninsula can be a waterfront destination which not only attracts thousands of domestic visitors but will also have an appeal which goes beyond Scottish shores.

“This first step has been made possible thanks to funding through Ayrshire Growth Deal – we hope and expect that £14million investment will be the catalyst for further funding to make this vision a reality.”

Other initiatives include a bid to reopen the Inventors Bridge connecting the harbour to the Ardeer Peninsula, all of which would be financed through the £251m Ayrshire Growth Deal.

North Ayrshire Council is currently progressing plans to demolish five tower blocks in the town after households voted in favour of demolition.
