Residential drive brings more Newcraighall apartments
August 21 2019
Block 9 Architects have come forward with plans to replace a former warehouse in Newcraighall, Edinburgh, with a four-storey apartment block to meet increased demand for housing.
GL Flooring owns the current site at the junction of Whitehill Street and Maingait Medway for use as their showroom, offices and storage standing alongside a row of C-listed miners’ cottages.
These constraints have necessitated a skewed profile to maintain a right to light for existing dwellings with a materials selection dominated by brick, broken by areas of glazing and timber panels. Rear elevations meanwhile will be faced in timber battens above a brick plinth.
An accompanying design statement read: “The redevelopment of the area as a whole aims to greatly improve the character of the Newcraighall for both new and existing residents. The demolition of the existing warehouse will be a visual improvement as we as reducing the noise level for the existing residents in the area.
“Replacing this existing structure with a high-quality residence constructed of a reduced palette of rich materials suitable to the context will add character to the area.”
The scheme would deliver 11 new flats in total with sixteen parking spaces, including five spaces for exisiting homes on the site.
