‘Big box’ leisure comes to Rutherglen with golf destination
August 14 2019
South Lanarkshire Council has recommended detailed planning permission be granted to a multi-level golf driving range in Rutherglen on derelict land off junction 2 of the M74.
Topgolf International has been designed by Cooper Cromar on behalf of Ashfield Land as the centrepiece of a new ‘big box’ entertainment destination for the area including a mix of drive-through cafes and restaurants.
Facilities will include an open-air roof terrace, event space and bar behind three tiers of driving bays, together with parking for 336 vehicles, to capitalise on the growing demand for ‘experience-led’ activities.
In a design statement, the architects wrote: “Natural stacked stone anchors the centre of the building. Timber panelling is used throughout the exterior and gives a modern, tailored feeling to the building.
“The grand entrance is flanked by a modern concrete block retaining walls that help create interest in the landscape.”
A cantilevered stainless-steel mesh entrance canopy carries branded signage and LED light display at night, protecting an interior stair from glare during the day.
Rutherglen will be Topgolf’s first new UK venue for 15 years and the first in Scotland.
Topgolf is described as a 'tech-heavy, multi-level golf entertainment venue with quality on-site food and drink'

Nothing screams placemaking like the phrase 'big box' either. Can't wait.
