Start set for £27m Stevenston school

Morrison Construction is set to break ground on a £27.7m additional support needs school next to Auchenharvie Academy in Stevenston, North Ayrshire, in the coming weeks.

Designed by Norr Architects the campus will house 210 pupils of all ages when up and running in 2020 and will incorporate respite and residential facilities for young people.

Amalgamating several existing schools in the local authority area the school will include a hydrotherapy pool, gym facilities, soft play, playground equipment and outdoor learning areas.

Michael McBrearty, chief executive of hub South West, said: “The ASN school and R&R facility will be a credit to North Ayrshire and will provide young people in the area with the best possible start in life. We are very pleased to be working with the Council on this project which we expect to be completed next year.”

Work on both facilities will get underway in a matter of weeks.

The teaching wing looks great. Not so sure of the main entrance hub, which looks very imposing and sinister. I wonder of they took their design inspiration from the 1940s Berlin plans?

I can't help wondering why they are still using the Hub process for these buildings when they produce such grim results. There's some fantastic examples where different procurement methods were used, like Hazelwood (special needs) in Glasgow and more recently the Broomlands and Langlee (special needs) schools in the Borders.

Sue - These Hub companies seem to have had their day have they not? I'm not seeing as many projects delivered through it nowadays. I remember 5 years ago when there was a new Hub project every other day, not so much now.

A wee update on nomenclature - "special needs" is no longer used - "special" is too discriminatory.
ASN is Additional Support Needs

Apologies for that. I have changed the terminology used.

£27m is a lot of money for a school for 210 pupils. does a school need life size windows, they look expensive, they could make it taller and have more space for exercise??
