Pitfodels care home plan brought forward

Proposals for a 65-bed care home in Aberdeen have emerged at the hands of Halliday Fraser Munro Architects on land off North Deeside Road adjacent to the Marcliffe Hotel, supplanting an earlier hotel expansion plan.
The Marcliffe has been commissioned by Meallmore to provide a care environment and amenity space within the Pitfodels Conservation Area with landscaped grounds overlooking the Deeside Valley.
The care home will adopt an L-form plan finished predominantly in an off white render with strong gable ends designed to break up the main elevation and roofline. Communal lounges will be located within a zinc-clad ‘tower’ with balcony views.
In their design statement, the practice wrote: “The main lounges are on each floor contained within a zinc-clad tower. This feature sits at the south-west corner of the proposal and provides articulation to the main elevation as well as marking a distinct identity to the entrance of the site. Large fixed windows provide impressive views to the south over the landscaping. Each level of the tower element is provided with a balcony offering residents access to safe and secure outside spaces at all levels of the development.”
A landscaping strategy includes retention of an existing walled garden and creation of a hard landscaped terrace to better appreciate the setting.
