Edinburgh’s Life Church bring forward revised expansion plan
July 3 2019
Aitken Turnbull Architects have revisited their scheme to extend Edinburgh’s Life Church, currently housed within a B-listed building on the corner of West Richmond Street and Davie Street, after dropping plans to demolish an unlisted extension.
The revised planning bid will retain this structure while adding two further extensions to house a new café and activity spaces as well as flexible meeting rooms above.
Outlining their revised approach the architects wrote: “The main two-storey element of the extension is proposed as a cast concrete colonnade providing a rhythm and structure to the open corner as well as the more closed elevation facing the neighbouring former school building. Soft light brick infill is proposed to the frame on private elevations, complementing the adjacent natural stone in colour and texture.
“A natural stone wall, as an extension of the boundary to the adjacent school building is proposed as the elevation to Richmond Lane. High-quality aluminium framed glazing supported with bronze coloured framing adds to the warmth and public appearance of the new extension.”
A ground floor café space with views to the Salisbury Crags will become the focal point for the new church.
