Feedback sought for Granton Waterfront coastal quarter
May 15 2019
The City of Edinburgh Council is inviting feedback on indicative proposals for the latest phase of development at Granton Waterfront following its acquisition of a former gasworks.
A 15-year development framework is being drawn up for the site to include new homes, a school, medical centre, shops and business space together with associated public realm improvements intended to better connect the area to the wider city.
A design team comprising Aecom, Arup, Collective Architecture, LUC and Studio for New Realities will oversee the vision, which seeks to transform Harbour Road into a bustling ‘High Street’ at the heart of a mixed-use coastal quarter.
This will see the current route widened to include dedicated bus and cycle lanes in addition to more generous footpaths and planting. Heritage assets such as a lighthouse will be restored to bring vibrancy to the area and its newly accessible waterfront.
At the heart of the proposals will sit Forthquarter Park which will be extended to include a retained gas holder and quarry, offering dynamic vistas for a possible new school.
The resulting framework will be put before the council’s planning committee in the autumn for approval following the consultations conclusion on 26 May.
