Colony model inspires Leith waterfront homes
May 10 2019
EMA Architects are to offer a fresh twist on traditional Edinburgh colony housing with the launch of the latest element of Waterfront Plaza by CALA Homes.
A contemporary take on the historic building typology the new homes will adopt a contemporary approach, offering occupiers modern open plan living spaces combined with generous windows over three levels.
Building on the traditional colony layout each property will have its own external staircase, allowing each home to benefit from its own front door. These access points will be generous in size to encourage socialising and augmented by a private top floor terrace for the owners of upper homes.
EMA director Craig Main said: “The colonies at Waterfront Plaza offer a modern take on an iconically Edinburgh design. The clever layout means that each home has its own front door, creating that sense of ownership and community that has made the housing model so popular.
“We’ve been able to take the best elements of the design and modernise them, to ensure they meet the needs of families in 2019, with features such as open-plan living spaces.”
Waterfront Plaza is scheduled to launch over the summer.

At least the ground floor flat can be converted into a boathouse to get to shore as sea levels rise....and there’s even a handy balcony you can get airlifted off!
Those staircases are awful and I'm not even going to pass comment on the top floor shenanigans - but these don't look anything like the density of the traditional colony, would be interesting to see the overall plan for these as the colony living is much more than external steps and individual flat types
