Gilmerton Gateway mixed-use proposals emerge

Plant machinery specialists Bernard Hunter have brought forward indicative proposals for a mixed-use retail development in Edinburgh incorporating a medical centre, community hub and 60-bed hotel.

An application for planning in principle prepared by Mackenzie Design Company earmarks brownfield land to the east of Gilmerton Station Road for the commercial hub, referred to as Gilmerton Gateway.

In a statement, the company wrote: “The vision of the Bernard Hunter family business is to regenerate the brownfield lands that neighbour the company headquarters in Gilmerton and create a well-designed and high-quality development.

“Gilmerton Gateway is integral in the long-term strategic plan of the family with the intention being that Bernard Hunter would build and manage the overall operations with associated income reinvested back into the family business.”

A new junction would be formed to provide access, connecting to a pedestrian and cycle route bisecting the site.

A bus terminal would offer direct connections with the city centre

There's a longer piece about this that states they've stayed away from housing because of local community opposition. Which is just... great. Great great stuff.
